“Making the decision to have a child is momentous. It is to decide forever to have your heart go walking around outside your body.”
- Elizabeth Stone

John felt like he was going out of his mind. He was sitting in the hospital cafeteria with his four year old daughter, trying to keep his crap together so he didn’t upset her. She was a cluey little thing, so much like Stiles in so many ways. It was just hard to try to keep your emotions in check around one of your kids when you were worried sick about the other two. His family had grown so much. For so long, it had just been him and Stiles, but now it was them, with Scott and Melissa, and little Hope they had welcome as a untied link between them. He loved his family to the point there weren’t enough words to cover it. He had just always had an extra worry about Stiles, and the danger he could be in.

He was onto his fourth coffee, sitting there watching his daughter draw pictures of unicorns and fairies across the page of the notebook Melissa had fetched from the hospital stationery closet for her with a pack of crayons... )

#43: HURT

When Melissa came out into the hospital corridor to him where he was pacing, looking pale and stressed herself, she had some relieving news. They pumped Stiles’ stomach, cleaned up the cuts he had on his arms and feet, he was sleeping for now but should be okay - physically.

He nodded mutely, but the relief was still overshadowed by the icy chill inside of knowing his son wanted to hurt himself. As soon as he teared up, Melissa was there, wrapping her arms around him in a soothing hug that he needed so much, it took his breath away.

Torpid
adj. 1. inactive or sluggish. 2. slow; dull; apathetic; lethargic.

When John woke that morning, it was early. Very early, but that wasn't unusual for him. He had always been an early riser, which was the complete opposite of his son. That morning was very, very different to any mornings in his recent history. When he woke, the sun must have just been coming up because it was watery and peeking in through the crack in the curtains left when he mustn't have closed them over completely the night before.

He was also naked. He couldn't remember the last time he woke up naked... )

#20: TOGETHER

With John’s wife's heart-breaking passing a few years ago, and Melissa’s marriage breaking down from her ex’s drinking problems, they had come to simply work together in the parenting of their sons, Stiles and Scott. There wasn’t any sort of verbal agreement, it just fell into place and worked.

Melissa’s support was something John valued and treasured with every passing day, especially with the boys getting older now and their “problems” more serious and worrisome when they arose. Right now, with his son’s recent terrifying experiences and ailing health, he was more grateful of that help and support than ever.
